Safety in Action Conference tackles a wicked problem

The Safety in Action Conference in April will deal with contractors and CEOs, research and change, wellness in the workplace and, for the hard-nosed, making the safety training dollar work.

Presented by the Safety Institute of Australia, the Safety in Action Conference will boast 50 expert speakers from industry, law and academia.

While the CEOs of some of Australia's most prominent organisations, such as Grocon and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, explain their approaches to safety on April 20, researchers will compete for cash prizes as they reveal the latest research findings.

At the conclusion of day one, leading international safety academic Professor Patrick Hudson will head a list of leaders in an OHS roundtable forum discussing "safety – a wicked problem" at the Safety in Action Conference this April. Among the forum members will be the CEOs of the Australian Institute of Management and the Victorian WorkCover Authority, the Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary, law firm directors and Professor Andrew Hopkins.

Professor Hopkins will also deliver the keynote address on April 21, discussing the Texas Refinery fire. Other themes for the day will be contractor management, culture, and contemporary matters that broaden the workplace safety focus to mental health, school violence and OHS harmonisation. Contractor management has received renewed attention following the publication of the new harmonised laws in December, which extend OHS obligations beyond the traditional employer/employee relationship.

Day three will begin with a keynote presentation by WorkSafe’s acting executive director, Stan Krpan, who describes harmonised Work Health and Safety laws beginning in 2012 as the "next big thing". The laws will formally encompass health and wellbeing, another feature of the April 22 program. The day will be rounded out with two very pragmatic themes – making your safety training dollar work and strategic and operational planning skills. Speakers from John Holland, Boral Plasterboard, the Army, Qantas and Wesfarmers will offer their own practical experience.

Held by peak OHS professional body, the Safety Institute of Australia, with the support of WorkSafe Victoria and sponsored by Downer EDI, the Safety in Action Conference will run from April 20 to 22 at the Melbourne Convention Centre.
